How listings are vetted

  1. 1

    Start from Google Maps

Every Ontario landscaper on Google Maps with at least one review.

  2. 2

    Read the business's own words

Its website and the services it lists on its own Google profile.

  3. 3

    Keep only sod installers

Listed only when it says it lays sod. Selling sod or installing turf is not enough.

  4. 4

    Check every change by hand

Claims, corrections and removals are verified before a page changes.

Every business on Sod Installers started as a landscaper on Google Maps in Ontario. That is where the list begins, not where it ends. A landscaping category says nothing about whether a company lays sod, so each business was checked against its own words: its website, and the services it lists on its own Google profile.

A business is listed only when it says it installs sod: a sod installation service, sodding, laying new sod or a finished sod project. Selling or delivering sod is not enough, and neither is artificial turf or seeding on its own. Nearly 2,000 Ontario landscapers did not show that, and they stay off this directory until they confirm it.

Owners can claim their listing to correct details or add photos. Every claim and every correction is checked by hand before the page changes, and a business that asks to be removed is removed.

How to choose a sod installer in Ontario

A new lawn often comes down to what happens underneath it, so the way to choose between sod installers is to compare how each one plans the work, not only the price. Every business on our city pages has said in its own words that it lays sod, and how listings are checked explains the evidence each one needed. Shortlist three or four that serve your address, then ask each of them for the same things.

Get a site visit and a written scope. A careful installer walks the yard, measures it, checks how water drains away from the house and looks at access before quoting. Ask for each part of the job as its own line: removing and hauling away the old lawn, minor or major grading, the depth of topsoil or triple mix, the type of sod and the farm it comes from, cleanup, and a warranty that says whether it covers the sod, the labour or both. Two quotes with the same total can describe very different jobs.

Ask about the preparation. Problems with a new lawn often start below the sod. Ask how the old lawn comes out and where it goes (installers who handle old-lawn removal say so), how the yard will be graded so water runs away from the foundation, and what they'll do about pooling water, which new sod won't fix on its own. Removing a lawn and regrading both break ground, so a free utility locate has to be requested before anyone digs.

Ask about the sod itself. It's a living product, and rolls left stacked too long can yellow. Ask which farm it comes from, when it's cut and whether it's laid the day it arrives. Ontario's agriculture ministry says Kentucky bluegrass, widely used for home lawns, performs best with well-drained soil and full sun, so ask what the installer lays in the shady corners.

Check the work before the crew leaves. Look for staggered seams pushed tight, clean edges along beds and the driveway, a roller pass and a deep first watering. From that day the watering is yours, so get the plan in writing and check your municipality's rules for new sod, which differ from town to town. If you're adding irrigation, ask whether the lines go in before the sod.

Compare on scope, not on the total. The price of sod installation depends mostly on the work around the sod: the size and shape of the area, removal and disposal, grading, topsoil, access for the crew and delivery. Pick the installer whose written quote spells out the preparation, and keep that quote for the day the crew arrives.

Frequently asked questions

How does a business get onto Sod Installers?

It has to say, in its own words, that it installs sod: a sod installation service, sodding, laying new sod or a finished sod project, on its website or in the services it lists on Google. Selling or delivering sod is not enough, and neither is artificial turf or seeding on its own.

Do I need a utility locate before new sod goes in?

If the job breaks ground, yes. Ontario Dig Authority, formerly Ontario One Call, says a locate is required for any project that breaks ground, no matter the size, and asks for the request at least 5 business days ahead. The service is free, and the person doing the digging should submit it. Lines you own yourself, like power to a shed, need a private locate.

Are there rules for watering new sod?

They are set by municipalities, not the province. The Region of Waterloo issues a temporary permit for extra watering days from May 31 to September 30, Barrie allows 14 days of watering for newly laid sod, Markham allows 2 months, and several York Region towns give new sod a grace period. Check your city page or your municipality before the sod arrives.

Can my installer spray weeds on the new lawn?

Only with permitted products. Ontario bans cosmetic pesticides on lawns: pesticides made with 2,4-D, Diazinon or glyphosate cannot be used to kill weeds or insects, and only ingredients on the province's Allowable List can be used. A business that applies pesticides for hire needs an exterminator licence from the ministry.

Does Sod Installers check licences or insurance?

No. Sod Installers lists businesses that install sod and shows their Google rating and the services they confirm. It does not check licences, insurance or WSIB coverage. Ask for proof of insurance and a written quote that names the sod, the preparation and the cleanup before work starts.

Is it free to be listed?

Yes. A basic listing is free and stays free. Businesses can pay for a featured position or a premium listing, and those are marked as paid on the page.

My business lays sod but is not listed. What do I do?

Use the claim form with your business name, phone number and a link to where you offer sod installation. Every request is checked by hand before a listing is added or changed.
